How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in California?
Charging at home is the best reason to own an electric car. A Level 2 charger adds 25 to 40 miles of range per hour, which means a full battery every morning. The install itself is usually a half-day job, but the price can vary a lot from one house to the next. Here is what actually drives the cost of an EV charger installation in California.
Distance from the panel to the charger
This is the biggest variable. A charger on the wall next to the panel needs a few feet of wire. A charger at the far end of a detached garage may need an underground conduit run. Every extra foot is wire, conduit and labor.
Circuit size
Most homeowners choose a 48 amp charger on a 60 amp circuit, which charges nearly any EV overnight. A 40 amp charger on a 50 amp circuit is slightly cheaper and still fast. A NEMA 14-50 outlet for a portable charger is the lowest-cost option, though hardwired chargers avoid outlet wear over time.
Is your panel full?
Older 100 amp panels often lack the capacity or the physical space for a large new breaker. Two options: a smart load management device that throttles the charger when the house is busy, or a full 200 amp panel upgrade. Load management is cheaper; the panel upgrade adds long-term value and capacity for solar, heat pumps and more.
Permit and inspection
California requires a permit for a new 240V circuit. We include permit handling in every quote, and we schedule the inspection so you do not have to.
Rebates
Many California utilities and some cities offer rebates for home charging installations, and there are periodic state and federal incentives. We help customers gather the paperwork so the rebate actually gets claimed.
Tesla Wall Connector vs. other chargers
The Tesla Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector are excellent hardwired options. ChargePoint, Emporia, Wallbox and Grizzl-E are strong choices for other brands. The install cost is similar across brands; the charger price is the difference.
