Why Are My Lights Flickering? 6 Causes From Harmless to Urgent
Flickering lights are the most common symptom people ignore, and one of the few that can point to a real fire risk. Work through these causes in order.
1. A loose or incompatible bulb
Tighten it. If it is an LED on an old dimmer, the dimmer is probably the problem; LEDs need compatible dimmers. A dimmer switch replacement fixes it.
2. A large appliance starting
A brief dip when the AC or a refrigerator compressor kicks on is normal on a marginal service. If it is dramatic, the circuit is overloaded or the service is undersized. A dedicated circuit for the appliance or a panel upgrade solves it.
3. A loose connection at a switch or outlet
Flicker in one room or on one circuit often traces to a backstabbed or loose connection at a device. This is a quick electrical repair, but it should not wait, because loose connections arc and heat up.
4. A failing breaker
Breakers wear out. A breaker that is warm to the touch or trips without cause should be replaced.
5. A loose neutral at the panel or meter
If lights flicker throughout the house, especially with some rooms bright and others dim, suspect the neutral. This can damage electronics and start fires. Call an emergency electrician and the utility the same day.
6. Utility or neighborhood issues
If neighbors see the same flicker, the problem is likely on the utility side. Report it, and consider surge protection since unstable utility power is hard on equipment.
